You Wanted Dick Naylor You've Got Dick Naylor

April 27, 2012

Someone on here challenged me to illustrate Wyatt Earp's favorite horse in Tombstone and, well, here you go:

Several years ago I ran into Tate Wilford at Festival of the West and he had a very authentic cowboy look a la 1880s. Took a photo of him and recently did this scratchboard of his pose.

And speaking of Festival of the West, I heard it from the horse's mouth that the longtime festival will be revived next year. Mary is back in the saddle. More details to come.

What will the last Baby Boomer look like? Well, if you get past the odds of it being a woman, I think I know. This is Kid Burns: He's a cranky ol' bastard.

Can't stand the youth of today (that would be 2062).

"Kids today don't know jack about nothin'. They don't even know how to bogart a joint! It's just crazy, I tell ya. What happened to our world?"

Was Dick a mare?

   C. NEIL.

A mare--  quite funny! You may have mistaken Dick for his sister Elizabeth Naylor.

C. does have a point, the horse shown is missing...er...a certain something, a certain tapered pouch along the belly.

  Chet,

Why,whatever do you mean?Maybe Mr. Naylor dresses to the left and it is out of our line of sight;or were you referring to his fanny pack where he keeps his cell phone and trail mix?

Y'all-  maybe Dick is having trouble relaxing with all of us staring at him.

  Sue,

    An excellent point(or lack thereof)!

Like the plains draw of the cowboy. No the holster isn't backwards, I have one and you would be surprised how easy it is to retrieve the pistol from that angle.

Saw a gentleman yesterday at the Genoa Maverick's fast draw barn who had stuck his pistol in the back of his pants. I pondered upon this setup for awhile about all the possibilities. Someone could easily disarm him. It would be quite a trick to draw the gun from that angle and he could very easily shoot his arse off in the process. But whatever rows your boat.

Or, in this case, whatever chaps your ass.

Depending on how it is set up, with a gun on the back of your hip in what would normally be considered a backwards position, then placing your fist or fists on your hip (very common when sitting on horseback as well), a very natural non-aggressive gesture (more of a disgusted with somebody stance) that places you in the perfect position to draw the gun without a lot of movement.

Just as easy to blow your knee cap off the other way if you don't know what you are doing.

Wes Hardin had a vest holster (supposedly), they said he was very proficient with, but anybody who tried it said it was very unnatural and difficult to retrieve the gun.

Here is one version of what that holster may have looked like;

Just like anything else I reckon. If you want to be good at something, practicepracticepractice.
