I do not live in 'cowboy land' so have a limited knowledge about their dress.

Did any cowboys, other than when dressed up, ever go around like Gene or Roy?

And we would not have done that to our horse either.

In about 1950 I went to the Cow Palace, San Francisco, and saw Hopalong Cassidy. He was decked out like Gene here. I thought I died and went to Heaven.

When seeing Hoppy, they raffled off a white colt. I promised the All Mighty that if he let me win, I'd never be a bad boy again.------Its a good thing I lost.

Sam, cowboys/buckaroos dress differently according to the region too. Here's one of my favorite links to a video showing buckaroos working and the wide variety of clothing they wear. Dave Stamey is the singer and a working buckaroo.

  Sam,

Isn't real cowboy dressing ranch dressing? This looks more like a fruit salad! My uncle bought me one of these glitzy outfits when I turned four and I had to pose for photos and I remember how mortified I felt and still do when Dad trots out those pictures.I wanted to dress like James Garner or Gene Barry!

Anthony, I'm alot older than you and my FAVORITE was Black Bart. I took an old black granny dress and made a cape, mask, chaps, etc all in black. I had black boots and a black hat. I was about 6 yrs. old. I didn't think anyone could recognize me in my disguise. I was the neighborhood vigilante.
