For those of you who received our July issue, you'll know who I am talking about: our cover boy, Jesse Cain, who idolizes Hopalong Cassidy. (You can also see him in our "Lifetime Subscription" web ad...a fantastic deal, by the way.)
Today, I heard from his mother, Christi Cain. Christi originally approached me about 8-year-old Jesse back in March this year. She told me that a photo of him appeared in the new book,
Hopalong Cassidy: An American Legend, by Grace Bradley Boyd and Michael Cochran. Would
True West be interested in featuring him in some way? I call receiving that e-mail one of my serendipity moments. I have a few of those at the magazine, where exactly what I am looking for crosses my desk exactly when I need it. As it turns out, we were embarking on our "Kids in History" issue, and we hadn't yet decided who we wanted to feature on the cover. Here comes along adorable Jesse Cain, but I did not want to excite his mother until I knew for sure. So I told her about the article, and asked her if she could send some photos of Jesse for the article, which she did.
Christi was a joy to work with, as are many of the thoughtful people who write in to
True West. Throughout our e-mail exchange, Jesse would pop in every now and then. "Jesse says to tell Mr. Bob 'Boze' Bell 'Howdy' for him!"
Then Mr. Bob "Boze" Bell let the cat out of the bag and told Jesse that he was going to be on our cover. After I confirmed that with Christi, Jesse popped into our e-mail exchange again. "Jesse's face lit up! He is excited, and called his Grandmother to tell her about it. Then he went to the barn to tell Topper [his horse]. It was so cute!"
When I told Christi that our copies were finally in so I could find out how many she would like to receive, I got an e-mail directly from Jesse. "Meghan- will you send mr. george jones a magazine and put from me or from mr. bob. his address is [blocked out] thank you-Jesse Cain."
Jesse also included his address, probably to make sure I didn't forget to send copies to him too. How adorable! Jesse, by the way, was on his way to visit Mr. Jones, the Country singer, at a fan club party held in June. (Library of Congress honored Jones in June by adding his 1980 song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today," to its National Recording Registry.)
Today, Christi was thoughtful enough to share with us Jesse's experience receiving the magazine. The pictures and the note were so sweet, that I had to share both with all of you.
Howdy Meghan,
I don't know if I have emailed you about how Jesse liked the Magazine. If I already have, please forgive me. He was just beside himself with it!!!! His chest was a little broader and stuck out some too! :) Thanks to all who made it possible for him to be on the July issue. The write up was nice and the background was awesome! I just can't thank True West Magazine enough for all the hardwork and dedication it must have taken for all of you. Please tell Bob Boze Bell "hello" for Jesse and that everytime he hears his voice on the Western Channel, he comes runnin' to hear another True West moment! Jesse said, (when he saw the magazine for the first time, "Oh, Mama, 'Hoppy' would be proud wouldn't he? Wouldn't he just give one of those gut bustin' laughs and then pull on my kerchief and probably tell me thanks partner for keepin' me alive in your heart and always bein' square and tellin' me how important it is to always tell the truth?" That Meghan, is how Lil' Jesse is. So smart for his years!
Christi Cain
Here are the pictures she included of Jesse getting the July issue from UPS!
