Okay, I confess.

I haven't been to San Antonio for about 12 years. And that was for a public radio conference (one of my past lives...before I became an Old West fanatic).

I got to see the Menger, and the River Walk, and the Alamo.

And now I'm writing an article on the preservation of the Alamo.

I'd been feeling a bit uncomfortable about it. Not because I don't like the topic--I do. Not because I doubt my abilities (well, I sorta do at times...). Not because I couldn't find any information. Nope--it was because I don't like to rely solely on the testimony of other folks. In this business, you have to do that on occasion, and you make do as best possible. But it's always better if you can see a location to get your own impressions.

I finally opened up with my wife Patty, telling her what was going on. Her immediate response: "So, why don't you go to San Antonio?" That simple. Her okay just opened things up and made the decision pretty simple. So I'm going to San Antonio next Monday--coming back Tuesday--and spending time at Alamo Plaza. I'm staying at the Menger. And I'm really looking forward to it.

Did I mention I have a pretty incredible wife? If she had the time, she'd come with me--and she is not an Old West fanatic by any stretch of the imagination. But she loves seeing new places, and she really is into the West.

So all the guilt is gone.

And I'm headed to San Antone.

Mark, enjoy your stay! I've stayed at the Menger during each of my trips to the historical city and it is truly wonderful.

The Alamo fanatic in me wants to give suggestions, but I understand the importance of visiting Alamo Plaza and to explore and experience for yourself. The Alamo truly is a hauntingly beautiful place.

All the best,
Wade
