My friend had a trivia question about what the outer metal ring on a wagon wheel is named. I thought it was a wheel rim, but he said it has a specific name. Help!!!

  Sam,

Regrettably it is just known as a tire.I'll bet he/she was hoping it was something more exotic like "ZAPDOODLESNIGGLEFROTZ"!I used to own a beautiful old phaeton with leather fenders, silver plated lamps and big wire wheels with solid rubber tires,It was an 1890's thing of beauty and my horse Chester looked mighty smug pulling it along!Ifound it in an old carriage house where it had been languishing since before 1910.

That's one of the explanations I've read about how a "tire" got its name. You build a wheel from wood and you "tie" it together by shrinking a band of steel around it.
