Everyday here at the James Preservation Trust requests come in for factual information. The fake & faker stuff gets blown out fairly easily. Queries about the partisan or outlaw careers of F & JJ get referred to published authorities or directed to authoritative resources. We handle most of the stuff related to the James family itself.
Today, however, produced the most unusual request ever to come in. The question came from Germany. The questioner asked is, " what his [Jesse James] most favorite food was or what he liked to eat."
The Trust has a couple of recipe books from James descendants a generation later than JJ, but nothing from his time. The only possible answer I could think of is "take-out."
Your thoughts, or facts if you have them?
Comment by Sue Cauhape on April 30, 2012 at 8:17am My guess is that the James brothers ate a lot of "found."
Since the James boys were on the run from posses and the law so often, I would guess "fast food."
Comment by Stan H on April 30, 2012 at 9:31am I am sure they ate whatever was avaliable at the time, especially when on the run. Beans, and sow belly most likely.
At home they ate what all rural America did, pork, greens, whatever veggies they could grow, wild life,,,,
I assume in the towns they would eat whatever the local cafes offered.
Comment by Gay Mathis on April 30, 2012 at 12:00pm Have read the "rumor" that Jesse liked chili..
Was there anything in the cookbook "Outlaw Cookin" regarding recipes of Annie (Ralston) James for Frank's favorite food?

Eric,
So,what was Jesse's favorite socks color? Now the other question doesn't seem so unusual!
