What interests me about this is not only the redirection of focus on Holliday, but the addition of a supposed love triangle between Doc, Wyatt Earp, and Kate Elder.
Not really sure where the writer came up with that little bit of business. Never came across any information in my studies, directly linking Wyatt Earp and Kate Elder in a romantic relationship of any kind. But it does sound like good drama for TV. And it is yet another TV western headed our way.
Hell, the more the merrier.

Maybe it was not Kate Wyatt was interested in,,,,lol
Not that is anything wrong with that,,,lmao
Comment by Mary Doria Russell on November 22, 2011 at 8:52am Believe me, no one is more surprised than I about this sudden swerve in the story. I never refer to Kate Harony as Kate Elder, and there's no hint of a relationship between her and Wyatt in the novel. Sigh... That's Hollywood.
Comment by Jim Holden on November 22, 2011 at 9:34am I read Mary's book, and enjoyed the heck out of it - particularly with the major focus on Dodge City Days, which I think gets overlooked too often in the rush to portray "The Gunfight". Given the right treatment it would make for a magnificent story on HBO with the leeway to portray things in a more realistic manner. There were some great characters in the book that could come to life in the film!
I guess this "love triangle" thing is something of a "fad", given the recent movie "Blackthorn", which more than hinted at the love triangle between Butch, Sundance and Etta Place! I guess it gives the story a more salacious twist opportunity.
But yea, any Western in a pinch and a good one about Doc would be move enjoyable.
Comment by James Allder on November 22, 2011 at 9:57am Mary, you have my complete sympathy. Look on the bright side, having to address that discrepancy is a perfect invitation to welcome people to read your book !
Great for you, Mary. As for the triangle, Hollywood has a history of doing that ... taking a great story and turning it into something else. There's about a 50/50 chance there's will be a good story as well.
As for Wyatt and Kate, one can't be a stoic, all-business gambler and gun fighter all the time.
