The father of outlaw John Wesley Hardin, James "Gip" Hardin, was a Methodist preacher and circuit rider in the mid-1800s. Hardin's father traveled over much of central Texas on his preaching circuit until 1869 when he and his family settled in Sumpter, Trinity County, Texas where he established a school – also named for John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.

Most people probably would not realize that the man considered to be the deadliest gunman in the West was the son of a Methodist minister.  Wes has been called the  "deadliest preacher's son in the West."  Well, the most notorious outlaws in American history were the sons of a Baptist pastor.  Bill Doolin was the son-in-law of a Methodist minister.  His widow remarried to a man who was a Methodist minister and Bill Doolin's son himself became a Methodist minister.  There are probably a host of others as well.  Just because the parent is a clergyman does not guarantee that the child will be law-abiding or God-fearing.  What became of Deacon Jim Miller's children?

That is true Margaret.  Just because the parents are God Fearin' Folks don't mean the Children will be.  Will have to do some Research on Deacon Jim Miller and His Kids.

Conversely, if I'm not mistaken, the great lawman Bill Tilghman's sons led a troubled life of crime.  Those things seem to happen often.

Sometimes, a child is "driven" to the wrong path BECAUSE a parent was a preacher. Spending all his time attending to the needs of his flock instead of those of his children has pushed many a youngster on the path to ruin and destruction.

St. Paul made it quite clear:  A MAN WHO DID NOT TAKE CARE OF HIS OWN FAMILY WAS WORSE THAN A HEATHEN--I su pect he was dealing not only with men who squandered their money to the family's detriment but also to those who neglected their families while taking care of the flock!

At the tender age of 13 I was introduced to the ways of iniquity by a 15 year old wild child preacher's daughter.I've always had a thing for older women!

Anthony, Ben Franklin preferred the company of older women as well because, he claimed, they don't yell, they don't tell, and they don't swell. Remarkable man, ole Ben.
