My father was born i on a farm in Iowa in 1899.  He said that he and his father and three older brothers went hunting each season, but that my grandfather kept complete control of his weapon until he was fifteen.  Before that, it was kept lock up  UNTIL  they went hunting.  His older brothers left home in 1917 as part of the Rainbow Division.  I really feel if guns were treated with respect we would not have had a number of the tragedies we have experienced.  In 1984, a fourteen-year-old student who was being treated by a psychiatrist took guns from his home to school and shot the place up.  The vice-principal died.  The guns were not locked up and they were kept loaded at the boy's home!

Agreed Margaret! Children should be taught safety! Guns should always be locked up!

Some years ago, there was a rash of accidental and not-so-quite accidental shootings in Florida.  People were getting shot right and left and some of the shooters were children and in some places guns were being left laying around any old way.  One five-year-old brat threw a tantrum and shot and killed his baby sitter because the sitter would not allow him to stop the ice cream truck.  The Governor was so outraged--I believe the shootings happened in a period of only a few months--that he rammed legislation through that if somebody left their guns and ammo laying around willy-nilly and someone was shot, they went to the pokie!

STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!!!  If somebody is so stupid that they leave loaded guns, ammo, weapons, and what have you laying around where any toddler, brat. or looney can get their hands on them and they go to the pokie big time, that is one less stupid running around loose.

Weapons are sometimes needed for protection, and some people live in fear of somebody breaking into their homes--and I am not talking about people who have paranoia.  Some years ago in Virginia, a lady whose home had been burglarized kept a loaded gun beside her bed each night.  She locked her door one night and went to bed and locked her bedroom door and put her loaded gun on her bedstand.  she was awakened by someone kicking in her front door and started screaming that she had a gun when the intruders started kicking in her bedroom door.  She fired through the door and killed a young police officer.  It was a drug raid and the young officewr who was killed was the son of her town's chief of police.  An informant told the police that if they went to her home they would find illegal drugs.  The lady was not involved in drugs and the informant was a former neighbor with whom she had had problems.  Later, other neighbors remembered that they had seen the former neighbor on the sidewalk across from her home watching the raid.  The police were looking for him the next day and he was no where to be seen.
