Bill,
Great article & marvelous paintings. The piece opened with a a standoff, what looked like a threatened lynching, a bunch of hard cases vs. a Dudley-DoRight looking character. What's the story behind the painting?

Dan,
Thanks for the positive comments on the Wall Drug article. It was a fun one to work on. The painting you refer to was painted by Harvey Dunn to illustrate David Lamson’s story “Oh, Once in My Saddle” which appeared in the April 30, 1938 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The story takes place in Alberta, Canada where a father and son track down two renegades who had stolen their horses.

I enjoyed your article, Bill.  Thanks!  I only wish you'd written it 8 years earlier, so I could have read it before I stopped at Wall Drug and could see only the ticky-tacky souvenir crap!

Wall is about half way between my house and my daughters, so we go past there a lot. I haven't stopped for a few years, but I guess I had better, the next time. I't about an hour from here.

This article was the brain child of Jim Hatzell who kept pestering me that the story needed to be written. Hats off to Jim Hatzell!
