Beautifful day in Colorado yesterday so decided to take a ride up from Denver to Good Old Leadville. What a change the old town is goining thru, the days of basing the towns livelyhood on mining apears to be gone, now history fans they are going the historiral, and renovating the old buildings route, This is great and a good job they are doing, lots of new stores on Harrison Street catering to the tourist, with some acuall touristy shops that had some fun items to look at and buy. I have been looking for a replica clock that I saw in Dodge City last winter. looked on the web and could,nt find one and there it was in a store in Leadville,So my Dodge City clock that I bought in Leadville is proudly mounted on my patio cover, who would think. Had a great lunch at the Delaware Hotel that has a good menu and the interior of the hotel has been nicely renovated. This is where Molly Brown would come in and warmed herself in the winter months, Went down to 316 Harrison St. where Doc Holliday lived. worked and acually shot his last man. This address sadly was closed for some renovation work but look forward to it opening in the future, So here is another town THAT IS TO TOUGH TO DIE. So keep up the good work old town and heres another place history buffs can enjoy her great past.

Another item I like about the old town is they keep the original names on the buildings, nothing wrong with Tombstone naming every thing after the Earps and Doc but it is refreshing to see some thing original

The last man that Doc shot was William (Bill) Allen. He didn't kill him. I'm a bit fuzzy on the name of the saloon. I think it was Hymann's. Doc gambled there sometimes.

Allen had loaned doc $5. Doc was having a run of bad luck and couldn't pay. Allen made it known that if Doc stepped out on the streets that he'd get his five bucks or shoot him. Doc, who had already been fined $25 for going healed, couldn't do so, because he didn't want to go to jail as he was sans cash.

Doc stashed a pistol behind the bar in Hymann's.

One day he was standing by the door, behind the bar. Allen came inside. Doc said later that he noticed a gun sticking from Allen's back pocket. Thinking that he was about to be shot, Doc grabbed his gun and shot Allen in the elbow. The bullet passed up along his arm and exited at his shoulder. The hit knocked him down on all fours. He recovered, but it was a painful wound. I don't know if doc ever paid the five bucks back or not.

Little known fact. This same Bill Allen took a pot shot at Wyatt Earp from behind Fry's studio at the OK Corral fight. He was also a "Cowboy" in Tombstone as well as a member of the House Gang in Lincoln.

The House gang and the Cowboy's had a working relationship moving stolen cattle. William Allen is mentioned in Tombstone, Lincoln and Leadville.

I've been visiting Leadville for decades, but man, just walking along the street is a chore! It's at 10,000! Doc Holliday lived there for several years off and on. He liked the "action" and was making a living gambling and doing some bar tending. I think the altitude combined with his TB killed him, not to mention his seriously challenged his liver.

Doc loved high stakes poker games. So did Wyatt Earp. Wyatt's moto was, "Always bet high, that way you lose less when you win." Think about it.....it makes some sense......sorta.
