Tombstone Rose
Since it's springtime and flowers are in bloom, I wanted to mention the "other Tombstone celebrity," the Tombstone Rose. We had the pleasure of visiting this remarkable and lovely lady and even brought home a clipping. This little piece of this magnificent "tree" has grown to circle the living room twice and has even survived nibblings by the local deer and our terrorist cat, Snigglefritz. The Tombstone Rose is truly the rose too tought to die. We've planted our little trimming in the ground…

Wyatt Earp's Revenge
Here is another disappointment for those of us hoping for a blockbuster western. I had high hopes for this one given that Val Kilmer was in on the project. It will be available on March 6, this year on DVD - not in theatres.
I watched the trailer today and it seems like a good western tale, loosely based on the real life killing of Dora Hand in Dodge City. It seems Wyatt had a thing for Dora and he heads off with a posse that includes Doc Holliday to go after the culprit,…

Map of Tombstone, AZ in 1881
Using various sources (including among others, a map by Mr. Bell, and one provided by the National Archives,) I drew up my own to give the reader of a specific chapter in my book "Western Legend" a better understanding of the geography of Tombstone. I felt the narrative would be less confusing if I provided this along with a key or legend. The publisher, unfortunately, could not figure out how to scale down the file size and get it into the pdf, so the map was removed from Chapter 10. As…

Mary Doria Russell's "Doc"
Just finished reading Mary Doria Russell's novel, Doc. While a murder mystery runs through this novel about Doc Holliday, the main story focuses on John Henry Holliday's time spent in Dodge City and his growing friendship with the Earp brothers. Russell's research provides a detailed view of Dodge City as it was during the cattle drive era. Mid-Nineteenth century dental practices, Kansas politics, and lifestyles in general round out Russell's personality descriptions of Doc, Wyatt, Morgan,…
