Most Unusual Jesse James Request Yet

Everyday here at the James Preservation Trust requests come in for factual information. The fake & faker stuff gets blown out fairly easily. Queries about the partisan or outlaw careers of F & JJ get referred to published authorities or directed to authoritative resources. We handle most of the stuff related to the James family itself.

Today, however, produced the most unusual request ever to come in. The question came from Germany. The questioner asked is, " what his [Jesse…

135 Anniversary of the Northfield Bank Robbery

Seems like every day is an Anniversary of some historical incident or event, relating to the era of the Old or Wild West.  Even if the incident or event didn't even occur in the West.  This one has always been one of my favorites to study.  One-Hundred and Thirty-Five Years ago today, the James-Younger Gang attempted to rob a bank in Northfield, Minnesota.  And they got the crap kicked out of them for it.

According to Cole Younger, Charlie Pitts (one of three men who went inside the…

More Western Shows coming to TV !

This is getting interesting.  In addition to the aforementioned Hatfields and McCoys and Gateway -- NBC have ordered a pilot script from the producers of the high school football show Friday Night Lights.  The title of that one was not mentioned.  However ...

The article (below) also mentions other TV western projects, coming our way.  Including AMC's Hell on Wheels, a show about the building of the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1860's, A&E's…

Here Comes Another Western TV Series for TNT, called "Gateway."

Maybe things are looking up for the western, again, in spite of the lackluster performance of Cowboys & Aliens.  This is the second western series announced this week.

Top 25 Western Movies

I thought this would be fun a fun post to write, but it took 4 days to finish it.

This is a list of my top 25 favorite western movies.  When not working hard on researching and writing my story, these were the films I screened during a lunch or dinner break, or for general inspiration.

Clearly, not everyone's list would be the same, this is simply my list.  I'm sure your own would be different -- so let me know what you think.  You can leave a message on my blog,…

Why is COWBOYS & ALIENS Not Doing Better ??

I decided to analyze this, with deep concern over whether or not the western genre has anything to do with the film's unexpected, unenthusiastic response from the public.  The pic involves two genre's, western and sci-fi, and while I "hope" the public don't blame the western genre, I know Hollywood will due to sci-fi's great track record.  :(

130th Anniversary of the death of Billy "Kid" Bonney

To commemorate the death of a historical figure who is still very controversial today, I've posted an a brief passage from my book "Western Legend," wherein other historical figures of the American Wild West (Frank James, Virgil and James Earp, and Tom Horn) discuss their own first or second-hand knowledge of Billy "the Kid" Bonney.  And to make the passage come alive, I integrated a few photos and a couple YouTube videos, for general reference and entertainment.

Enjoy…

Map of Tombstone, AZ in 1881

Using various sources (including among others, a map by Mr. Bell, and one provided by the National Archives,) I drew up my own to give the reader of a specific chapter in my book "Western Legend" a better understanding of the geography of Tombstone.  I felt the narrative would be less confusing if I provided this along with a key or legend.  The publisher, unfortunately, could not figure out how to scale down the file size and get it into the pdf, so the map was removed from Chapter 10.  As…

10th Excerpt from "WESTERN LEGEND" - Tom Horn / Stevie Ray Vaughan Combo

Getting closer to my publication date, these excerpts are intended to be more scatter-shot.  This wholly fictional passage, occurring in the story's third act, involves Tom Horn ambushed by a group of Cattle Rustlers in a Ravine, at night and in the rain -- and includes an optional YouTube link to music that inspired the chapter.

If you happen to take a look, let me know what you think.

Fake Jesse James Con Man Goes to the Devil

This story is just too amusingly sweet not to post. When linking Jesse James to stuff that just isn't factual or true, turnaround becomes fair play.

Buying votes at $800 each versus rigging the whole election

Today on election day, I completed writing another chapter of my book on the history of the Jesse James family. Oddly enough, a portion of this chapter addressed the election rigging in the Arizona gubernatorial election of 1938 by relatives of the Jesse James family from Kansas City.

Just a couple of months ago here in Kentucky, almost all of the elected officials of Henry County were convicted of vote buying at $800 per vote. Their incarceration strangly leaves the county…

If you thought you knew Jesse James, wait until you meet his family. So says Eric James, author of the new, long awaited, four volume history of the family of Frank and Jesse James.

According to historian Nancy Samuelson who has previewed portions of the upcoming book, the author of The History of the Dalton Gang says James’ book is likely to send historians back to find what history they missed.

GUNFIGHT IN TRUCKEE: THE TEETER – REED DUEL

By: Guy H. Coates

“There’s liable to be a funeral soon,” shouted a citizen. “Teeter and Reed are having a time down the street,” exclaimed another. “Teeter had better keep away and let up on him.”

These words were heard up and down Truckee’s Front Street on a cold November evening in 1891.

Jacob Teeter, for many years, Constable of Meadow Lake Township, was about to make his first – and last – mistake as a… Continue
