The Fading History of An Adobe Wall

June 8, 2013

As per Kathy's birthday request we took in two movies yesterday at Harkin's Camelview 5: "The Kings of Summer" and "Before Midnite." Enjoyed them both.

When we built our house back in the eighties, we had an adobe wall building party and asked everyone to bring something to put in the wall.

Great to Be Misunderstood?

June 7, 2013

Kathy's birthday today. Made her birthday pancakes like she likes 'em, thick and small (just like she likes her men). Taking her to two movies today. Sneaking out at one. We'll make a day of it.

Organizing a show for Santa Fe in the fall at Due West Gallery. This will be one of the pieces I take over later this summer:

The Curious Perks of Being BBB

June 6, 2013

One of the nice perks about living in Cave Creek is walking outside in the morning and seeing this:

Christa Barro Barrels By On Horseback

And one of the perks of living close to Scottsdale is being able to go down to gallery…

Thunderheads Over Union Pass and The Capture of The 66 Kid

June 5, 2013

Still working on highway heatwaves:

The roadway is a bit better but the rippling effect that happens along the horizon is too overworked. My memory of highway heatwaves is of the entire horizon rippling like inching worms gone berserk.

My…

Gettin' Shady With Forty Dollar Sadie

June 4, 2014

Twelve years ago, in our sold-out February-March, 2001 issue (our most sought after back issue with a good copy bringing $300 or more), we broke a story about Josie "Sadie" Marcus, otherwise known as Mrs. Wyatt Earp. Written by Carol Mitchell (her grandfather was a pallbearer for Wyatt Earp) the article made the claim for the first time that there is reason to believe a known prostitute in the Prescott area who went by the name of Sadie Mansfield was, in…

Flaming Flattops & Two-Lane Flattops

June 3, 2013

Had a grand weekend working on a subject I know a thing or two about:

In addition to the great nicknmaes we had in Kingman, most of us got our dos (as in hair-dos) done by Chuy at Bond's Barbershop in downtown Kingman for $2.

Shiprock Hitcher

June 2, 2013

A year ago yesterday (June 1) my family took off, in the heat, for Flag at 4 p.m. and after a one lane stoppage on I-17 south of Mund's Park, we landed at the Knight's Inn ($50) and then walked around Tommy's town in the cool air, landing at The Carriage House, where we ate outside ($150) and then off to the legendary Monte Vista Hotel where we had drinks…

The Truth About The Bisbee Massacre Reward Monies AND Exporting Twang

May 31, 2013

I really enjoy working with researchers who know their stuff, or, more accurately, know how to find the best evidence if they don't know. Doug Hocking knows the so-called Bisbee Massacre where five Clifton cowboys robbed the Goldwater-Castenada Store in December of 1883 and in the process shot and killed five people, including a pregnant woman. Who was firing from where and which way they rode is difficult to decipher but Doug gave me and Gus Walker great…

Muskwa-Kechica Artists

Thought I'd share a picture of some folks attending one of the Muskwa-Kechica Artists camps. I haven't had the pleasure of a ride through this land other than looking at it through the window from the asphalt, but it is marvelous. Of course, I've seen many pictures, most of them grander than the background here. I'm no good at scetching or painting but I can hold scenes like this in my mind for a very long time.…

More In-dins On Indians

May 30, 2013

Utilizing one of the boards I saved from the trash yesterday, I whipped out this little study in my series "An In-din On An Indian In In-din Country." This is number three.

Executing Trash And Other Lessons In Art

May 29, 2013

Cleaned more in the garage this morning and bit the bullet and threw over a hundred semi-paintings, under-paintings and patina-paintings into a big, recycling trash can.

Wasn't easy. I've been storing some of these boards for years. I just kept thinking at…

Not-So-Gentle Comments

May 26, 2013

Drove up to Prescott yesterday morning in very heavy traffic. I would have thought all the Memorial Day travelers had beat cheeks up the hill on Friday, but it was bumper to bumper all the way to Cordes Junction.

Got to the plaza in Prescott at about 10:30 (I thought the event was at the Phippen Art Museum, only to find out it was sponsored by the Phippen on the plaza in Prescott so that added a half hour to the…

Tall Women at The Phippen Tomorrow

May 24, 2013

I'm going to be appearing at the Phippen Art Museum outside Prescott tomorrow (Sat.) along with the finished, ten-foot-tall "Not-So-Gentle Tamer" sculpture. Very exciting. Haven't seen the finished version yet. I'll be there from ten to two, signing prints and books and selling DVDs of "Outrageous Arizona" so if you're up in the cool country tomorrow, drop in and see how the beauty turned out.

Sleep Derived Sketches & Highway Hitch Hikers (fantasy edition)

May 24, 2013

Thanks to Sir Eric Wolfgang, I'm enjoying Dali's crazy, amazing book, "50 Secrets of Magic Craftmanship". Last night, before retiring, I read this:

"Secret Number 3 is that in undertaking an important pictorial work which you are anxious to bring to a successful completion and on which your heart is particularly set, you must before anything else begin it by sleeping as deeply, as soundly as it is possible for you to…
