My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys

My heros have always been cowboys. Now I know that in this age of the metrosexual and the get in touch with your feelings guys that this is a rare and unusual statement;but it's true and I'll explain why
The first western I remember was High Noon.I was in a sick bed with mumps or measels and being too young to be able to read only had the television as my companion. For some reason they showed the movie three times that day and every time I watched it.I marched with Gary Cooper and warned him when… Continue

Critics View of Westerns

GaryEdgerton,an author of a new history of American Tv,said in a recent USA Weekend that westerns are on the wane because we're" less enamored with a sense of manifest destiny and nation building than 50 years ago".Creators of new Tv westerns need to freshen up the formula.
I found this statement to be kind of funny and wondered why if the westeerrn was as dead as the movie executives and critis say they are that when a western is well done they do so well in the ratings.
You can take a look at… Continue

A Trip to Yesterday

Recently my family and I had the opportnity to travel time and distance,no it was not a trip to the Twilight Zone;but a trip on the Inland Railroad. When we boarded in Eusus Fl we didn't realize that within twenty minutes we would not arrive in our schedled Tavares but 2ooo miles further west and a 120 years ago.We arrived in Tombstone AZ just in time for the Gunfight at OK Corral.
When we deboarded we were rewarded with a mock up version of the Town too tough to die.Wyatt and his brothers were p… Continue

Lessons from The Alamo

Next week will mark the anniverary of the fall of the Alamo. It is sad to see how far our society has digressed since then.At that time and place you had patriots willing to die for their homes and beliefs. They were not soldiers or warriors per say they were lawyers, shopkeepers and farmers. They represented all nationalities, races ,and creeds. They knew the true meaning of courage and committment and honor was more than just a word it was a way of life.
It was a time when there was no need for an e… Continue

Meeting Roy Roges

When I was a kid I'd saddle up with Roy and Dale and fight the bad guys until it was time to sing "Happy Trails"I learned from this show and others like them the code and foundations of my life,do what you think is right regardless what anybody else will tell you.Treat everyone with kindness and compassion,be true to your word and many other things that society has forgotten.
So about twenty five years ago I was thrilled to see that Roy was coming to our town to open one of his restaurants.I exp… Continue

Cowboy Bill thank you for the kind words and vote of confidence. But to be truthful with ya, I really enjoy the Reel West Trivia, even if I have to look things up. So no worries, between the two of us I think we can keep it goin'. You just take care of yourself and get well so that next year when you come out to Arizona we can go have us a sarsaparilla or two! Thanx again pard.

Hi Bill: I see you live in FL. I invited a friend, Laura, who joined True West last week, and she lives in FL also.
Guess there are cowboys and cowgirls everywhere.
Hope you are feeling well,
Pat

Hi Bill:
Are you the resident greeter of new members? You have more "friends" than there are people here in Maine, which is good, as Maine is the forgotten state w/o population.

What am I doing here--I'm a mis-placed westerner. When God said, "Who wants to live in Maine?" I was distracted talking to a cowboy and thought God said, the "Plain" and so I quickly answered "Me".
And here I am 50 years later still in Maine with homestead, horses, family, and friends. Guess, writing about, and visiting the west will have to be enough, for now.

Howdy Bill! Nice to "meet" you. Clint Walker is and always will be my idol. The night before I met him, I tossed and turned all night. I had 42 years of "ideas" of what he would be like. When I met him and he spoke, my heart melted. He and his wife Susan were so friendly and he seemed to really enjoy meeting his fans and telling us about his movies and tv shows. He is indeed a big good looking fella, but you can also tell he has a heart of gold and a backbone of steel. They sure don't make'em like that anymore!
