Brisco County Jr

The disc set has been out for a couple of years, but I have only recently found it. Needless to say, I snatched it up... it was the only copy the store had. I bought the Brisco disk set for $20.00,...

McClellan Saddle

I found a good (I think) information source for the McClellan saddle, but since my first hand knowledge of the McClellan is sparse at best, I though that some of you may want to add your 2 cents......

Thanks for looking

If there is one thing that I have learned about the folks, is that when someone visits a profile it is either because they want a little poke, have had their whee delicate sensitivities offended, or are brave enough to consider you for friendship. It is my hope that you have come here for the later of the three.
Though, I must admit that I do enjoy offending ones whee delicate sensitivities. I also enjoy a good poke, but I happen to already have that department taken care of. :)

If you did happen to come here to make a new friend, then come on over to the fire, stick your hand out and say howdy. Otherwise, you is'a tresspass'n... NOW GIT !!!

Now, if you have stuck around this far, I would also like to invite you to a project that I have been working on. It is called the Wild West Society. It is dedicated to the history, legend, and lore that made the west wild. It is a place for both reenactors and competitive cowboy shooter types. It is just getting started, but I hope that you will at least give it a peek.
Oh, and by the way... WWS is not an extension of any business, nor is it supported by any group or organization. But even better than that, it is free to join and to take part in.
So, come on over and check it out.

I've never ridden one, but I think it does sort of resemble an English Endurance Saddle, which I do own and have ridden. I used this saddle on my Arab and it fit well. On my Quarter Horse it looks like a pancake and quite stupid since he is built ...

The moniker "mare's leg" was a spin-off on the old term for the Colt's SAA .... "hog leg". It does somewhat resemble the hock portion of a horse's hind leg.

The first saddle I ever owned (a long, long time ago) was a McCellan and I have a WWII McClellan sitting on a fancy custom walnut saddle stand in my living room. I've spent many an hour in one. If you are riding correctly (keywords: IF and CORRECT...

Thanksgiving... older than America

Thanksgiving has been observed in the Americas since the 1600s and was probably carried with families as they traveled west. While as a nation, we observe it as a day to be thankful for the things that we have and to share with others, we tend to forget that the roots of Thanksgiving go much further back than Plymouth Rock and even Christianity.

Thanksgiving has roots in the Old testament. I will touch on it briefly, as it is relevant to the observation of Thanksgiving. Not as a religious lesso… Continue

Bring'em Back

I miss westerns and I don't mean these "contemprary" westerns where two men fall in love and can't quite each other or even the gang of fashion models turned outlaw/ vengence gang.

The type of westerns I am talking about are the ones where the characters where good, bad, and ugly. They where tough men and women living in a harsh world... not in some kind of sugar coated candy land where everything was "PC".

One of the things I liked about Lonesome Dove was the political incorrectness of it, es… Continue

Rubber - an essay as relavent to the "old west"

Knowing that there are a lot of people who doubt the dubiousness of using rubber for period costuming and attire, I decided to do some research into rubber, it's uses, and history of this wonderful "modern" marvel.

I was very surprised by a lot of what I discovered, as will probably most of you who happen to read this will be. While I am sure that there will always be those who disdain rubber and anything remotely modern, rubber is one of those things that probably should be readily added to an… Continue

The Appaloosa Horse

I suppose the immediately following stuff could be called a forward and has some personal information that I chose to share with anyone interested. I have gone ahead and put the "forward" in bold letters. If you don't care to read it, then simply skip down to the Appaloosa information part.

As a kid, there was a pasture that adjoined our modest 1/2 acre. In that pasture, there where often horses, that for the most part, went unattended, save the regular feeding and watering that they requireContinue

Yea, and besides I learned I was not "artistic" enough to build those $5000 saddles, and that is about the only way a man could make any money at saddle making.

Now I clean and rebuild saddles and tack. I enjoy getting ahold of some of the old time saddles, like Hamleys or Miles Citys and refurbishing them.

I also work with elk and deer hide, making bags, etc.
