Had a great time last night at the opening concert of the 2013 Genoa Cowboy Poetry Festival in (of course) Genoa, NV. Waddie Mitchell, Dave Stamey, and Hot Club of Cowtown mingled poetry/storytelling, cowboy songs, and 1930s country swing for a spectacular show. What a night. Then we topped it off with a steak dinner at the Tombstone bar and grill just down the road. The festival continues through Sunday, although I realize it's far too late for most folks to get here from too far away.…

I heard today that Mackay Hedges' novel, The Last Buckaroo, may be in movie production. Has anyone heard anything about this? The Last Buckaroo is about two ranch cowboys, Tap and Dean, who roam from ranch to ranch working as buckaroos typically do. It's a great and very realistic story about this way of life told by the real deal, Mackay Hedges. He's still working on Dean's ranch in Montana and is somewhere approaching his 80s. His second novel, Shadow in the Wind, is the sequel. The Last…

Just got word that the folks at the Genoa Cowboy Poetry Festival are looking for western authors to exhibit their books at the festival. One contact name is Bryan Fitzgerald. Also, here's the Vendors/Artists page of the Festival website.

J.R. Sanders said… You'll find some interesting, and opinionated (!) foljks here. You might want to check out the "Western Writers of America" group here. Not much posted there yet, but it's growing.
I heard about you through my sister, who read Paradise Ridge and loved it. I haven't had the pleasure of reading it yet (my reading's hopelessly backlogged), but I will!

Not nosy at all - smart marketing. Turns out (and I should have guessed) she bought a used copy on Amazon. So no extra royalties, but an extra reader.
Glad to hear you checked out the site. I'm not a kids' writer per se, but I did my little book in the hopes of hooking a few kids on learning about their Western heritage. It does seem there's more Western material being aimed at kids, and that's a very good thing. Whether it has any long-term effect I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I hope so.

I haven't found a simpler or cheaper way to sell than via PayPal - it's what my web guy recommended. So far I've had no problems, but I've heard similar stories to your friend's. For selling other books, the Amazon Associates thing is easy to set up - very user-friendly. That said, I'll admit than in the year-plus I've had it on my site, it's yet to generate a single sale. Still, it costs nothing to set up or maintain, so I've kept it.
