Me & the West

I'm interested in Western history, especially Kansas based history. Especially Northwest Kansas history. Things happened there, too, ya know! Like the Last Indian Raid in Kansas and the Dewey-Berry feud.

Suggestions to Keep Things Clear... and Readable

I've read several articles lately.... either online or in magazines.... that have me guessing what or where they are about. Like I have to read the whole thing to figure out what we are talking about.. and maybe not even then do I get it.

I may be old school but it seems to me the Who/What/When/Where ought to be explained in the first couple of paragraphs. Especially the where. If something is written for a local paper for instance, who is to say it is only going to be read by local… Continue

Curly Musgrave

Got a few minutes to read the latest True West and was saddened to read that Curly Musgrave, cowboy singer/songwriter, has died. Had the privilege of hearing him and his singing partner Belinda Gail at Ottawa Kansas' Old West Days some years back. What a creative man! Was looking forward to him and Belinda possibly coming back to Ottawa again sometime but I guess I'll have to settle for Belinda's solo act. Of course she is wonderful, but am sure sorry we'll only get to hear Curly on his… Continue

A Cowboy's Hat

Talking about hats.......

A Cowboy’s Hat

What is it about a cowboy’s hat

That makes her heart skip a beat or two?

You put a hat on an average Joe

And he’s down right handsome, it’s true!

There once was a time when a cowboy rode

On horseback all day and all night!

A ten-gallon hat with a hurricane string!

Take his hat and you’d have you a fight!

His hat his protection through thick and through thin

From sun, wind,… Continue

Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Induction

The Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Induction was last Saturday. Its held at Dodge City at the Front Street Museum. There were five inducted - 3 who are living and 2 posthumously. The categories are Rodeo Cowboy, Working Cowboy, Rancher/Stockman, Entertainer/Artisit and Historian.

I was particularly pleased to be able to support the induction of the late Wayne Dunafon in the Rodeo category as he was from my area of the state. Wayne, born in 1919, died in 2001 after a full life that… Continue

Thanks, Sharon - the entrancing thing about the Old west is that it was all so very much more varied, interesting and complicated than you might think! And there are so many wonderful and as-yet-untold stories!

We bonzai'd the horse at an early age. Acutally, it was a show our reenactment group did last year at Starr Western Wear here in El Paso. There were a couple miniature horses there and I couldn't resist the photo op.

Last name, I'm orginally from Erie, PA. My family is mostly from PA. We can trace back to Austria/Prussia/all over that part of the world.
