OK, we ALL win!

Yesterday I worte a little old blog about googling, or rather a bunch of cowboys having to google, the Cowboy Code and it sparked some enlightened debate. I I'm sure glad we can get juices flowing here, or anywhere else, because that's the way I learn so, Thnaks yall!

Here's the deal. We host a popular radio show and in the scheme of things that's not earth shattering. We entertain. We hopefully amuse people all over the world who enjoy listening to, for want of a better term, 'Western Music',… Continue

Cowboy Code?

I googled 'cowboy code" and found several thousand variations on an old, familiar theme. The cowboy code is something so ingrained in me I suppose I just took it for granted that i knew it by heart and could recite anywhere or at any time. I was wrong!
A nice young fella the other night dropped by The Ralphs Back Porch western radio talk show and visited with us in our chatroom for awhile and he asked a question. What is the 'cowboy code"?
His question sat there like a five hundred pound gorilla… Continue

Cowboy Poets, bless their hearts!

My old Daddy always told me "If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing right" & "Dont start nothing you dont aim to finish" & "if youre going to ride a tough horse, ride him like you stole him"

I recommend a whole lot of cowboy poets to my friends and neighbors and i take this job very seriously, sometimes i do it in a goofy manner, but thats just cause I'm a little goofy. I still take the job of recommending folks seriously.

Once in a while there is a critter that stands out in the cr… Continue

I LOVE True West

Ok, this may or may not be a blog about true West but it is a dadgum good tag line, dont you think? I love the diversity of opinions and ideas here. It is a wonderful thing to have this many people come together to agree on one thing...the love of that vast expanse of culture and life, the West. Now, the rest of it, we can agree to disagree all we want and that's ok too.

Whether you are from Texas or California we all have one thing in common, we are bred and born in the US and we all have that… Continue

Hi, from an Alberta cowboy poet, just for fun, what books do you read? I am working on one called "Twin Hearts", by a local writer, Annette Gray.

I've told several of our friends about it and hopefully, they'll tell more :>) Wish we could make it to Albuqurque (that's a lot harder to spell than Council Grove) for WMA but duty calls. Devon, Chuck and Outlaw Jessie Del are special friends, I know you all will have a great time. We'll be listenin' for sure.

Morning Ralph,

Much obliged for your important e-mail -- I really appreciate it, your thoughts -- I will get back with you later this evening, as I have an early start, getting ready to work a horseback for training for one of my customers.
I also want to review your whole website and other information you sent me.

Sometimes it's easier to tell what Western Music ain't! Although I write mostly Western songs, with some Country Gospel and even the odd "Country" one slippin' out, ther's a few things I'm lookin for to define Western. Topic - Western songs need to have a Rural inference or signature to them, showing that they are based from the land and the people close to it. Rythem - They have to be smooth and easy on the ear. You should be able to play them in the barn while working with horses, and have no fear of sudden reactions. Timeless - A true Western song could have been written in 1897, 1941 or 2006, and be able to draw the same reaction from the people who understand the basis from which it was written. Production - The song has to be able to stand alone with only a guitar and singer performing it. If the production becomes the song, slide it into the Country catagory. My 2 1/2 cent werth.
