The Aussie saddle is of the same basic design as the McClellan with a few minor differences. I'm not familiar with how the Aussie saddle fits the qtrhorse conformation. As for an original MvcClellan fitting a modern Qtrhorse ... no, it won't. They a…

You are correct Two-Step .... as far as the originals go. If the tree is designed around today's horse's the basic design is still quite good.

The failure of a factory BP load was nearly always the fault of the primer. The old cartriges used the same primer compouind that was used in the percussion caps. Consistency in the amount of hammer force required to set it off was not all that good…

When you think about, a sore backed horse or a sore butted trooper was of no use to the military. Therefore, the McClellan was designed to fit quite a wide range of horses and riders of the day. Granted, the original McClellans are a miserable fit o…

Morgan, If you use the old full brass shells and load them with black powder you do it the same as loading a muzzle loaded shotgun ... equal measure of powder and shot. I down-load my old '87 10 ga. shells to 12 ga. spec and they aren't bad to shoot…

The old Winchester catalogs list shot shells for #2, # 4, #6, and #8 which translate into a guage. Those 2, 4, 6, and 8 guages were almost exclusively used by the East coast market hunters that were trying to knock down as many ducks and geese as po…

The moniker "mare's leg" was a spin-off on the old term for the Colt's SAA .... "hog leg". It does somewhat resemble the hock portion of a horse's hind leg.

Are You A Re-enactor or Historian

I've been a part of both of these disciplines ... even before I knew they were different and long before either of them became what they are today. Actually I still am. I'm a living historian with the Arizona State Historical Society and I quite often get into a real good shooy-out. However, From what I see, the bulk of the folks participating in our "Old West" thing today tend to have a fairly narrow focus. It is often either on some specific character (Billy ther Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday,… Continue

Tombstone and Mounted Reenactors

I attended Wyatt Earp Days last weekend in Tombstone and had a grand time. visited with old friends and made a few new ones. There was one thing that did dissapoint me a little bit though. I was the only reenactor at the event that was mouinted. The reason this dissapopints me is that the most common costuming for reenactors seems to be the cowboy. Now a cowboy without a horse is no different than a pilot without an airplane. No matter how skilled he may be he cannot perform his primary function… Continue

Era Correct Clothing

There are a few (several ..... many?) folks that have an interest in some particulat era in history and seem to be fond of the term "period correct". I have a bit of a problem with that. For example .... if you built a brand new house today, filled it with brand new furniture, lined the closets with brand new clothes and shoes, and filled the garage with brand new vehicles you would be period correct for 2009 ......BUT .... you certainly wouldn't be typical, would you? What sort of automobole di… Continue
