"Randle, You should post on oklahombres.org in the old west pre 1907 blog if you haven't already tried there. There are many Indian Territory/Oklahoma Territory historians and authors that frequent that site. Someone there should be able to help…"

"If this is Guthrie, O.T. then the time frame would have to be around 1889 since Guthrie was established after the land run of 89."

"A great photo. It sure sucks getting old and not being able to do the things you use to do with little effort. Locked gates and Urban campers don't help much either."

These photos were taken May 1, 2008 at Highland Cemetery, Lawton, Ok. The occasion was the dedication of a new headstone for the grave of Heck Thomas, famous Indian/Oklahoma Territory, Deputy US Marshal, and the first Chief of Police of Lawton, Ok. In the photo of the three Deputy US Marshal's (history interpreters Ft Sill Museum) I'm on the left. We all three spoke portraying friends of Heck. I portrayed Chris Madsen and told of Chris and Heck and the killing of the outlaw Ol Yantis near Orlando, Oklahoma Territory in 1891. The other interpreters portrayed Bass Reeves ( who died before Heck), and Bill Tilghman.

Is your character based on a true person?

Thats great, my role besides IT and stunts is pretty much a bad guy if its fictional or true I still end up being a bad guy. Most of our good guys are too busted up or too smart to do the stuff I do. Ha
Its all fun though. Of course anybody can play any part they wish. I might try and scare up Marshal and come to one of your deals let us know when somethins happnin. We will be posting all of our public events on Tw and our site. I would advise the same for you all. We all need tourism.

Thanks for the compliment, I enjoyed your photos also. Tell me a bit about the Heck Thomas Memorial. Did the marker simply need replacement or is there more to the story?

I found a photo of the original marker in the internet, the new one looks great and is a fine tribute to Heck. I'm glad his descendants were able to make the dedication. Here's a "Well done" to all of you.

I have read in a couple of places he got the nickname at a young age but no one has offered the reason for it. Have you heard how the moniker of "Heck" got attached to him? It's one of the classic names of the old west.

If you would please pass along the address for that website. I would like to visit it myself.

Thanks

Thanks for the link - had to use some self control and shut it down, I could spend hours reading the discussions but I have some work to do around the house. Back to it later tonight.
