Sorry to confuse you my friend.  In the 60's i saw an Australian film in which a sheepherder with a wooden leg took count by putting notches in the leg. I never new the name of the film because   i  watched it on a relations  TV during a visit. It had already started by the time i arrived and as far as i can remember it was a replacement to the regular schedule. The memory of this guy putting notches on his peg leg has always remained with me. Regarding this picture . I have just replaced the sheepman  with a cattleman,and the notches are going on his crutch,not his peg leg. This character is based on the one legged cowboy in the culpepper cattle company.

But, Chet, what is he counting? Cattle, or the number of people he walloped with his crutch?

In the John Wayne movies the bandanas of the cavalrymen looked like bananas, too.

Thanks for all your comments boys . As a matter of fact he's counting the number of times he's had to cut the lawn this week. Gotta laugh, cos the lawnmower lost a wheel last week as well.
