Howdy, thanks for letting me know. I am currently working on the 1884 wild west show section of my book on John Liver Eating Johnston.

Howdy folks!  I don't know about bookstores (I live in L.A., where they hardly exist!).  But I know the Autry Museum will open their new Samuel Colt Gallery on tye National Day of the Cowboy.  I have in interview with the curator in my current Henry's Western Round-up.http://www.henryswesternroundup.blogspot.com

The Autry's NDOC event last year was great, and this year's should be as well (thanks for the heads up on the Colt Gallery, Henry).  Unfortunately, space limitations have prompted them to drop the book signings in the museum store from this year's agenda.  Bummer.

Jeff,

It's July 23rd this year.  I went last year, and I thought they struck a pretty fair balance between new/old West.  Something for everyone.  The Colt Gallery opening this year will be a treat.   I'm with you on the politics - whatever anyone's leanings, there's a proper time and place.

I'm curious to know if anyone's ever approached his/her local bookstores/other retailers about this and if so, what kind of response did you get?

Howdy, I am in the LA area and almost all the bookstores are gone.

The Melody Ranch has a gathering from time to time with their bookstore, just past, and the Autry can be called to see what they have planned.

If the store will sell your book you can arrange to have a signing, but I know of no store at present planning the NDC.

Got a local Barnes and Noble interested in possibly doing a National Day of the Cowboy event.  If anyone would like to propose the same, just contact your local B&N and ask for the Community Relations Manager.  If you prefer to inquire via email, the address code for the CRM is this: crm0000@bn.com (replace the four zeroes with the 4-digit store number, which you can find by using B&N's online store locator and pulling up your store's page.  You should find the store number on the left hand side, just below the calendar listing of upcoming events).

Please post here if you pitch one of these events, especially if you're successful.  If we can get a few of these going, maybe the chain will pick up on the idea and approach us next year.  Worth a try, anyway.

Jeff

The Autry has a Western Music Association Jam on the third Sunday of each month from Noon to 3:00 PM. They recently combined it with their Family Day at the Autry. Come join the fun and be sure to say howdy...

Jeff,

It is, though never as many as I'd like, of course.

Pretty much all traditional western with some new ballads about with a focus on the old west..... Much of what I do would come from the TV westerns and movies of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Think Sons of the Pioneers. Hope this will help. This is an open jam so you never know who will be there but the core are all Western Music Association members...
