Thank you for this group! I have been doing research lately for a class I am teaching in August...part of it concerns the "cowgirl" of Wild West Shows and the early rodeos. This is history that needs to be told. Those women were incredible and deserve recognition.
I hope others join this group....

After her retirement Annie Oakley lived near here in Leesbug FL where she feuded with the mayor and council when her dog Dave was run over by an automobile. When the concil and mayor refused Dave a proper burial in the local cemetary, she packed up and left and would never return again.

Annie trivia...Buffalo Bill kept her in short skirts with her hair down because the public was more enthalled with a sharpshooter that seemed to be a teenager than and older lady of 25.

She was frugal to a fault...due to her early years of poverty

more, she made it plain in her will that whoever laid her out after her death had to be a woman. She was very modest and did not want a man mortician.

My next book "The DAYES of Wyoming", due to be released 2010, has a female protagonist. The story is historically based, in the late 1800's. However, Bertha Daye is fictional, albeit a realistic "butt-kicking" horse trainer, wife of mountain man Charlie Daye, and mother to two orphans.
I'll let you all know when it is in print as I'm sure you'd enjoy her adventures.

I live in Maine! Although I'd love to help celebrate the spirit of Women of the west...not much chance of that, I'm afraid.
