For those fans of Appalosa and the other Robert B Parker's novels about the exploits of Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, this is worth reading. Though Parker has passed on, Robert Knott has picked up…Continue

Cain at Gettysburg

For Civil War buffs, this is a goood read. Written by Ralph Peters, his extensive research is very evident. This is a fictional account, but believable all the same. The author puts a face on the…Continue

Is the Western Dead...or on the Comeback Trail? 3 Replies

A lot of the big house publishers say that the Western genre is DEAD, and they've moved away from publishing Westerns. There are only a few publishers left who publish Westerns. I think, personally,…Continue

Welcome to any and all.

This is a place to discuss books about the Old West. The books can be fiction or non-fiction. Please identify which it is when posting comments about your book.

We will always try to be civil, polite, and informative.

Glad there's a place to discuss books here. I gotta tell you, I've been on a real Western rampage for about 6 or 7 months now. I'm kind of bogged down presently in the Sackett books...but I recently read a fabulous one by Elmer Kelton: The Raiders. My gosh was it good, and also informative historically. Well, as I get the time I'll put my two cents in here. Can I post reviews that others have written also?

Becky, please feel free to post whatever you wish. I hope this remains an open discussion forum I am not going to monitor it. Everyone should post whatever they want.

OK, I uploaded the cover of one of my Cowboy poetry CDs for now, until I find something better. I am concerned about copyright infringement so using my own is safe.

Let me just say, that I think Zane Grey's To the Last Man is THE BEST Western I may have read. If you can get beyond Grey making the scenery the main character in this novel, it is just yummy!! Better even that Riders of the Purple Sage.

I hope ya'll don't mind my joining this here group. Although most of my books are more from the Civil War times I do have a few Zane Greys novels that were given to me by my son. Like about 45 of them and no I haven't read them all yet. But I will eventually.

I am an avid reader. I enjoy modern crime novels, Tony Hillerman, C.J. Box and others. However, I do pick up a Western sometimes, and have experienced a renewed interest in them. I hope I can contribute something to this group. Thanks.

You'll enjoy this one...I'm a publisher and just published a book for Jere D. James called "Saving Tom Black." His next book is called "Apache." Anyway, I was in Payson at an event selling his book like pancakes, when these two women came by and said they'd seen a review in which Jere D. James was called "the new Tony Hillerman." Go figure. I've looked EVERYWHERE for that review, and damned if I can find it. But they were adamant. Sad days when when Tony Hillerman and Elmer Kelton died.
