Truth about Indians whooping and hollering

I would like to know if the Indians really did all that  yelling as in the movies. Seems to me

 they lose all the surprise element. I am part Cherokee and it does'nt make sense to me.

Be very quiet until you are very close. But once they know you are there anyway, scare hell out of 'em so that they can't hit anything even if they do shoot back.

Many thought they would scare off bad spirts, or at least scare the tar out of their enemy. Often, it was simply a means of overcoming their own fears.

The Cheyenne used to sing "Who let the Dog Soldiers Out," and that song was enough to send anyone who heard it fleeing in the opposite direction!

They're probably all right, Pat. I've heard several, often supposedly professional people sing things that made me run for the hills.

What is even scarier is that they sold some of that cr**.

Something else that they did(Apache) was turn around, bend over, and slap their butt while hurling insults. Several times, they received a well placed bullet in the booty for their insolence.

At least 1 Comanche pulled that in the Antelope Hills fight & a Tonkawa put a slug right where the sun don't shine.  I read where a Redcoat pulled it at Cowpens & got the same treatment.
