Great topic! I've got to go with Doc Holliday's hat in "Tombstone", Charlie Prince's hat in the "3:10 to Yuma" remake, Everett Hitch's (Viggo Mortenen's) hat in "Appaloosa", and Tom Harte's hat in "Broken Trail".
Augustus McCrae's hat will always be my #1 - I plan on buying a 20x version of the hat this year.
I am also a big fan of the "refined" Gus hat with the rolled brim worn by Duvall in Broken Trail.
....any hat placed on the head of John Wayne!!!
Bill Holden's hat in Wild Bunch
McQueen's hat in Magnificent Seven
McQueen's hat in Tom Horn (very Gus-like)
Bronson's hat in Once Upon a Time in the West.
Honorable mention goes to the Hoot Gibson style cowboy hats found in those old B serial Westerns.
Bo i cant believe that you liked Russell Crowes hat. But the others i agree with pard
and how long does it take to train a hat to fit right.
I both hate and love these "kid in a candy store" questions.
There are so many great hats that it is difficult to list them in a top ten catagory. But, here is my top 10 hats.

1. Hondo/ John Wayne cavalry hat from Hondo
2. Hitch hat from Appaloosa
3. Tristan hat from Legends of the Fall
4. Johnny Ringo hat from Tombstone
5. Josh Randal hat from Wanted Dead or Alive
6. Wyatt Earp/ Kevin Costner from Wyatt Earp
7. Quigley hat from Quigley Down Under
8. Dundee hat from Crocadile Dundee
9. Doc Holliday hat from Tombstone
10. Devlen hat from The Hanged Man

BTW,
The "Last Best West" site makes it even more difficult to choose. Dang, that is a great site and I couldn't help but get distracted a couple of times, looking at other stuff.

How about this one?
that's probably one of the more authenic ones, from the 1903 Great Train Robbery.

Other than that, most of the ones above are pretty good.
check out these hats

one of my favorite hats is clint eastwoods hat from unforgiven, matter of fact will have one made soon from the hat shop in fairplay colo.
Just when I thought PeaEye's hat in L. Dove couldn't get any better..they modified it with a roughed-out Beaver for ReturnToLonesomeDove. No Better!
Fav Cooper Western-- THe Westerner with Walter Brennan as Judge Roy Bean (he one an Oscar for his role). Not historically accurate but a fun movie. Like the scene were they spill the "rub of the raw" whiskey on the counter and it sizzles like acid then the drink it and reply "smooth" -- funny stuff.

Hats are real personal, need to be fitted to the shape of your face and head.  Most of these have something I like, but many I just can't wear.  I've always been partial to this hat, but haven't found a reproduction. Oh and I like all his songs as well.

  Jim,

Akubra makes a hat in this color and proportion but I think you'd have to step on it a bit to get it to look like this. You could also fiddle with a Stetson Open Road and come pretty close too.
