I always like to see new westerns being made, but I hate to see classics re-done.

I agree with Stan.  This is really a classic and how can they make it better?  Of course if they are just getting into the process it will several years before it hits the screen.  Let's see who the co-stars they pick for which roles.  How much will the budget be and where will they shoot it?  Faithful to original or changed to improve it?  Begs the question,  what other old western would you like to see remade if any?  Marion

Well, I'm not too crazy about the Cruise casting, but lets not forget that the original MAGNIFICENT SEVEN was a remake of THE SEVEN SAMURAI (and an inferior one at that). I'm holding out hope, but I do wish they would do something new.

I was going to say that I would rather see a modern remake of "The Seven Samurai".  However, given modern production standards and the way some recent westerns have been presented (Open Range and Apaloosa come to mind) I can't help but be excited about a new one.

Personally, I'd like to see a modern remake of Along Came Jones.  I saw the original w'Gary Cooper & Dan Duryea & a TV remake in the '50s w/Charlton Heston as Melody Jones--don't recall who played the villain.  I saw the TV version 1st, but the movie was better. It's one of the funniest Westerns ever made--far superior to things like Blazing Saddles or Rustler's Rhapsody.  When Cooper did comedy he often did it dead-pan--almost Buster Keaton, but not quite--which made it even funnier.  He did it dead-pan in Along Came Jones.  I think Tom Selleck could probably play a pretty good Melody Jones, but it'd be too much to ask him to dead-pan the role like Cooper did.  When Coop goes off to the showdown with Monte Jarrett, the villain, he gives the girl his bandanna.  He says he won it 'bronc stompin'.' She says 'Just a bandanna?'  He says "I come in twenty-first'--total dead-pan.  The way he delivered it was one of the funniest lines in the movie. 

The last fairly-good Western comedy I saw was The Villain w/Kirk Douglas & Arnold Schwartzenegger.  It was basically a live-action Roadrunner movie w/Douglas as Wile E. Coyote.  Mel Tillis had a cameo as Porky Pig.  It was funny, but it wasn't in the league w/Along Came Jones.

There are lots of great stories out there that could be made into a western movie ... that is one that makes a buck or two. Fiddling with a classic is a bad idea for anybody. Get a good story and make your own classic.

Sorry, David, I loved the story/translation of The Seven Samurai but enjoyed the gunfighter film version far more than the sword film version.

Who's going to play Steve Mcqueen and James Coburn's part, Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler? I guess they could round out the cast with Will Farrell and a couple of the Wayan boys for a good spoof??

 

Can you kill Mexicans in this day and age, even bad Mexicans, or will there be a outcry from the Latino community for racism??

 

This is going to be a patent leather buscaderro nightmare, with computor F/X's that will make Cowboys and Aliens look like a serious western.

 

There are tons of ideas out there, what in the heck is Hollywood thinking? Oh yea, they aren't.
