Permalink Reply by C. F. 'Charley' Eckhardt on December 12, 2011 at 7:44am You realize, I hope, that the fence-cutters were criminals. Most of 'em didn't own a single acre of land. They were grazing their cattle on other people's grass & watering them on other people's water. When a rancher fenced in his land--to which he had legal title here in Texas--he cut them off from free grass & free water. That led to the fencecutting wars in Texas, which the Rangers finally put a stop to. If you want something stopped in Texas call in the Texas Rangers. It'll stop.

The cattlemen who went in and squatted on it first just didn't want anyone else using the same free grass and water . It was public land and belong to Federal Government/State.This was set in Colorado in early 1880's .
