Howdy Everyone,

Nice new site you have here, so I think I'll move this thread over here from the old place. So, plain and simple what was the last western movie you watched? Here's mine:

"Appaloosa"(2008)
-Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen

Plot Synopsis: IMDB

New Mexico.Territory.1882. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are itinerant lawmen, hired by desperate towns as marshal and deputy. The city fathers of Appaloosa hire them after Randall Bragg, a newly-arrived rancher with money and a gang of thugs, disrupts commerce and kills three local lawmen. Cole and Hitch contrive to arrest Bragg and bring him to trial, but hanging him proves difficult. Meanwhile, a widow has arrived in town, Allison French, pretty, refined, and good-natured. Virgil falls hard, and it seems mutual, but there may be more to Allie than meets the eye.

Phantom's Review: I loved this movie ! Great acting from all the stars, beautifully filmed and a nice balance of action and humor. A wonderful western.

I finally watched "Appaloosa" this past week. Thanks for the recommendation. I enjoyed it.

I just finished watching, albeit painfully, "Death Rides A Horse."

How the soundtrack didn't win a multitude of awards is beyond me.
A couple of favorites for this weekend. both from 1985:

"Silverado"
"Pale Rider"
"The Horse Soldiers" (1959)
-John Wayne, William Holden

Plot:IMDB
A Union Cavalry outfit is sent behind confederate lines in strength to destroy a rail/supply center. Along with them is sent a doctor who causes instant antipathy between him and the commander. The secret plan for the mission is overheard by a southern belle who must be taken along to assure her silence. The Union officers each have different reasons for wanting to be on the mission.

Phantoms Review: Solid well made John Wayne adventure. Plenty of action and a good story (based on true events) and fine performances from the stars.
Just watched Red River with John Wayne, in an HD version from MGM. Still one of the top 20 Westerns of all time, and a continual surprise that people didn't recognize Wayne's performance. One of the few times that he portrayed a character and not John Wayne. Great cast, great movie! Bad hats is my only complaint. In that time period Westerners didn't wear what we think of as "Cowboy Hats" with upturned brims.

"Escape From Fort Bravo" (1953)
-William Holden

Plot: IMDB
In the Civil War, Fort Bravo is a prison camp for captured southerners. Its isolated position and unfriendly natives make escape almost impossible, but anyone who tries is always brought back by by-the-book Captain Roper. A group of prisoners hatch a plot to get away by bringing in a southern belle to distract the Captain. The plan seems to work, but the inhospitable desert, the murderous Indians, and - most importantly - the Colonel apparently wronged in love mean that this is only the start.

Phantom's Review: This is a great movie.Plenty of action, suspense and fine performances from the stars. A classic.
I watched a Western lastnight on IFC "DUCK YOU SUCKER!" or "Fistful of Dynamite".
I always look forward to whatever Westerns are lined up for Saturday morning on American Movie Classics cable channel...the last Westerns I watched were Tombstone and Wyatt Earp on History Channel last Saturday.

Currently re-watching WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE, the old TV series starring Steve McQueen. Last movie would be ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST starring Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, and Claudia Cardinale.
The entire first season of "Have Gun-Will Travel". What a great show.
