On this date in 1877, a drunken stage driver named Sylvester Powell, angry that Marshal Meagher had arrested him earlier, crept up on the marshal, who was attending business in the outhouse behind Hope's Saloon. Powell fired several shots into the outhouse wounding Meagher. Later, Meagher tracked Powell down and killed him.
