Risky Biz Blog is reporting that CBS Films is developing a feature reboot of " Gunsmoke" and has hired National Treasure: Book of Secrets writer Gregory Poirier to pen the screenplay.

Craig Baumgarten (Shattered Glass, Never Back Down) will produce the new take.

The action-adventure will re-imagine Marshal Matt Dillon, the hero of the classic Western, for modern audiences. The story will be set in the same American West as the original but will feature a contemporary look and modern action twists.

Poirier is said to be close to completing a first draft of the script.

Amazingly, I never watched Gunsmoke (or Bonanza) even though they were constantly on in our house due to my dad loving them. The quality of recent westerns like Appaloosa and Open Range makes me optimistic about this movie but I can also see it being modeled after other recent movies like the Matrix or the Fast and Furious. I think that would be a travesty.
