For those who know Billy Walker's song (and those who don't), the 475 foot suspension bridge was opened January 7, 1870. At the time it was one of the world's largest suspebsion bridges. It was closed to vehicle traffic in 1971, but remains open to pedestrians.

The Brazos suspension bridge at Waco was designed by the same guy who later designed the Brooklyn bridge.
