I’ve been working on a project to create a “relatively accurate” portrayal of Wyatt Earp at the gunfight behind the OK Corral. I’ve been talking with quite a few historians, including the folks involved in the PBS documentary that aired the other night. One main point of contention is Wyatt’s hat. Like one of the folks said to me “The bigger the legend the wider the hat brim.”
So I’ve been working with a hatter that specializes in hats from the 19th century and this is what we’ve come up with as being “as close as we can get” to the hat that Wyatt is pictured with in the Dodge City Peace Commission photo, which was taken a little over 19 months after the OK Corral gunfight.
